AMF Golf Management Instructor Summit
We recently attended a teaching summit at Pinehurst, North Carolina. In attendence were many of the top instructors in the country.
The purpose of the summit was to share information regarding all facets of golf instruction as well as having the opportunity to see where golf instruction is headed in the future.
The best teachers in golf have many traits in common, but there are two areas that really stand out above the rest. One is, that they are the first to acknowledge that they "don't know it all" and that they are always learning something new. Secondly, they are always willing to share information and ideas with other teachers.
At the Q School of Golf, we are always looking for opportunities to learn more so that we can become become better coaches for all of our students.
Many of you may think that golf instruction only consists of "private lessons" with your local pro. It goes well beyond that. When you look for an instructor, you should be looking for someone who dedicates all their time to teaching and who provides a variety of programs and other options from which you can choose.
Look for someone who is a great evaluator of your game and doesn't teach just one method, but one who can determine what will be best for you.
Golf instruction has changed tremendously in the last twenty years. Not only has technology changed the way the game is played, but it has affected how we teach as well. The use of video analysis, launch monitors, mental golf profiles, and numerous training aids are just some of the things you should expect in your golf instruction.
Fitness has also come to the forefront of golf instruction in recent years. Align yourself with an instructor who works in conjunction with "fitness experts" to help develop a golf specific training program for you.
Now is the time for you to begin to make your "golf goals" for 2009. It is also time to make a plan to achieve your goals. Simply wanting to get better is not enough. You must be more specific. Write your goals down, it makes them more real. Share them with your instructor and make a plan together.
